Managing Incontinence During the Holidays

Managing Incontinence During the Holidays

One of the most magical times of the year is when the holidays roll around.

If you or a loved one is managing incontinence, the holiday season may present unique challenges. With all the excitement, bustling preparations, and festive gatherings, it’s important to take a moment to prioritize your comfort and well-being.

Here are some tips to help make your holidays relaxing and enjoyable.

Eat the Right Things

Some traditional Christmas dishes can irritate your bladder and cause symptoms of incontinence, such as strong, sudden urges to urinate—even if your bladder isn’t full.

Everyone's body is different, so it's important to observe how certain foods affect your symptoms. If you have incontinence, here are a few holiday foods to watch out for:

  • Rich Desserts: Sweet treats like frosted cookies and fruitcakes may irritate your bladder due to high sugar content. Instead, opt for a slice of plain shortbread or a lightly sweetened dessert.
  • Creamy Casseroles: Dishes heavy in dairy, such as scalloped potatoes or creamy vegetable casseroles, may cause bladder irritation. Roast vegetables or mashed potatoes made with dairy-free alternatives are great substitutes.
  • Spiced Dishes: Spicy foods in stuffing, appetizers, or sauces can be bladder irritants. Consider using milder seasonings to keep holiday favorites gentler on your system.

Drink the Right Things

Certain holiday drinks can also contribute to bladder irritation. Here are a few beverages to consider avoiding:

  • Coffee and Hot Cocoa: Both regular and decaf coffee, as well as hot chocolate, can irritate the bladder. Instead, enjoy a warm, non-citrus herbal tea or a festive caffeine-free beverage.
  • Alcohol: Wine, champagne, and cocktails may irritate the bladder. Opt for sparkling water or a festive mocktail instead.
  • Citrus Juices: Popular mixers like orange juice or lemonade may worsen incontinence symptoms. If you’re craving a splash of flavor, try an infused water with cucumber or mint.

Be Extra Prepared

A little preparation can go a long way in making your celebrations more comfortable. Here are some tips:

  • Use Extra Protective Products: Use a booster pad to add protection to your usual incontinence product. This will give you added protection and ease your mind during festivities. If you are extra concerned, consider placing an underpad on your favourite chair or dining seat to stay stress-free from potential leaks.
  • Choose the Best Seat: Position yourself closest to the restroom at the dinner table. This ensures easy access if you need to slip out discreetly for a quick break.
  • Pack a Kit: Keep a small kit with essentials like zip bags for disposal, personal cleaning wipes, and extra products in your purse, car, or bag. This is especially important as an overnight guest. If you want to know how to pack the perfect incontinence kit, click here.
