What exactly is Bariatric Incontinence?

The term bariatric refers to a branch of medicine that studies obesity. Bariatric incontinence may be linked to challenges such as weakened pelvic floor muscles, skin folds, or difficulty accessing restrooms quickly. Understanding these causes is the first step toward finding effective solutions.

The three main types of incontinence experienced include:

• Stress Incontinence: Urine leakage that occurs when sudden pressure is placed on the bladder. This can happen during activities like coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting heavy objects, when the bladder muscles are unable to hold back the flow.
• Urge Incontinence: A sudden, intense need to urinate that makes it difficult to reach the bathroom in time. Often linked to bladder spasms, nerve damage, stroke, or other medical conditions, it can happen without much warning.
• Overactive Bladder: The frequent and sudden urge to urinate, typically more than eight times in a 24-hour period. This can disrupt daily activities and may occur alongside urge incontinence.
