Why does it occur during pregnancy?

Why causes incontinence after pregnancy?

• Hormonal Changes: Specifically, the fluctuating levels of relaxin and progesterone (which support bladder control) lead to incontinence issues.
• Weakened pelvic floor: Difficult/long vaginal deliveries may cause the pelvic nerves to weaken in turn reducing bladder control.
• Pelvic Organ Prolaps (POP): Sometimes, your pelvic muscles can become so weak that they can no longer support your organs, causing them to sag or droop. A sagging bladder can lead to incontinence issues.

What can I do to treat it?

• Stay hydrated: Aim to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of fluids every day. While this may seem counterintuitive, ensuring you avoid dehydration reduces the risk of obtaining urinary tract infections which can further complicate your incontinence management.
• Create a schedule: Using a toileting routine will assist in training your body to empty its bladder when intended but also prevent leaking.
• Remain active: Low-impact activities such as walking or swimming supports bladder health and reduces constipation.
  

When should I seek medical advice?
