When your dealt with a life changing event, navigating through this unknown can be overwhelming.
In 2018 my husband suffered such event, he had a hemorrhagic stroke which ultimately left him paralyzed on his left side. When the doctors told us that he would most likely be bed ridden and incontinent I felt hopeless.
This wasn’t supposed to happen while we were in the prime of our life, he was 49 at that time. I didn’t know how much that would change life as we knew it.
From trying to organize hospital beds, and Hoyer lifts, incontinence was not a familiar thing I knew much about, but finding Healthwick sure helped.
There was a great selection of products, from creams to diapers to masks and hand sanitizers now! Everything I needed was available. I was able to receive the necessary products I needed, in addition being able to try free samples was a bonus as sizes of diapers by different brands was a different fit.
This ultimately helped me decide on using TENA, they seem to be the best fit.
The best part is I can order late at night when I have time and know all will be shipped within that day.
Healthwick delivers their items in discreet packaging too! This has made things a little bit easier.
Thank you,
Susan

]]>When I started working at Healthwick as a Customer Care Agent, the world of incontinence was a foreign world to me. I did not know the first thing about adult diapers. Sure, I’ve watched Depend commercials while flipping through the channels, but I never gave it a second thought. So I was beyond overwhelmed when I started working here.
Healthwick offers such an array of incontinence products, from different brands, absorbency levels, styles, sizes, you name it. I delved right into studying and getting to know the products. I have learned and continue to learn an immense amount.
But it occurred to me, learning from a book is great, but what better way to have an intimate understanding of the products than by personally trying them.
And that’s what I did!
I was going away on a camping trip over a weekend, and it was going to be a long-ish ride, so what better time to try the Abena Pants Premium Absorbent Underwear.
The first thing I did was take measurements around my belly button and hip to determine the right size. This is the advice I give our customers because sizing can vary greatly from one brand to another and clothing size doesn’t reflect size of the diaper.
With that said….
The material of this product felt soft and goes up to the belly button.
At first, it did feel a tad uncomfortable around the leg area because it felt rather snug. At the same time, I felt somewhat at ease and confident that it did fit snuggly.
It did feel warm, but I was also sitting for the majority of time. I also wore loose and thicker clothing so that probably didn’t help with the warmth.
The diaper held up extremely well for 6 hours of pretty constant liquid. Although I was confident that the diaper was going to do its job, mentally it was hard not to worry about leakage. I have to admit I was worried about leaving the car.
But, I am happy to report that it did not leak at all, it kept my skin fairly dry, and kept the exterior of the diaper completely dry. The liquid was concentrated to the front and middle, with the back completely dry (I was in a seated position for most of it). The diaper did swell up quite a bit and made it a little awkward to walk, but bear in mind that I wore it for 6 hours without a change.
But all I cared about was that everything was absorbed, and it was!
My biggest concern coming into this was leakage. But I found that wearing the right size and having a snug fit is crucial.
Wearing a quality diaper with the right absorbency level, style and size gave me that peace of mind and confidence over the leakage concerns I had.
I sympathize and empathize with anyone who is experiencing incontinence on a full-time basis. If you have incontinence issues (or if you don’t) please remember that you are not alone and you have options. There are so many products (diapers, pads) out there and it can be very daunting.
Please talk to someone and learn about what is available to you, and choose an option that will bring you the most comfort and peace of mind!
]]>For those managing incontinence, travel can be intimidating. You may feel like you are limited to certain activities and fear that you may find yourself with embarrassing leaks while on an excursion. These are normal concerns and feelings, but if you’re well prepared there’s no reason you can’t travel and manage incontinence. Here are a few helpful tips and reminders for those who are managing incontinence while travelling.
It’s very important to ensure you have everything you need to ensure you stay leak-free and comfortable. Make sure you pack more than enough supplies; have more than what you think you’ll need. It’s also a good idea to bring a small bag or pouch with you to carry extra supplies for when you’re out exploring.
You should also bring disposable bags for soiled products in case you’re unable to properly dispose of your incontinence product while out and about. If you’re concerned about having leaks during your daily vacation activities, you should consider bringing a change of bottoms and/or underwear as well as adult incontinence wipes for a good emergency cleanup.
If you’re travelling to a warm destination and you know you’ll be spending time in the ocean or a pool, remember to pack a swim diaper or underwear. With both disposable and washable options available, a well-fitting swim product will ensure you can enjoy swimming worry-free.
This is something that many people often forget about. Different travel mediums have different restroom availability, which is something to be mindful of when planning a trip.
If you’re going on a road-trip and will be spending time in a car or on a bus; plan pitstops for washroom breaks. Check for enroute stops with public washroom facilities prior to leaving.
If you’re going to be travelling on a plane or train for an extended period, consider wearing highly-absorbent and long-lasting incontinence products. Having to change a soiled incontinence product in a small bathroom can be a challenge, so wearing a product that will require fewer changes is a great idea. It’s also a good idea to bring a disposable plastic back with you into the washroom for your soiled product, as the restroom disposal systems may be limited.
Doing research about your travel destination is always a good idea. Knowing about where you are going and what to expect is a good way to put your mind at ease.
You check online to see restrooms available at destinations you plan to visit while away. There are also mobile apps, like “Flush”, which will provide a map of public washrooms based on your chosen location. You can also look at local retailers to see if they sell your brand or a comparable incontinence product in case you run out. If you’re staying in a hotel or Airbnb, you should be able to find out online if laundry services are available.
While it’s important for you to enjoy your holiday fully, you should also be mindful of certain activities so you’re well prepared. For example, if you’re managing bowel incontinence and plan on spending time poolside ensure you have a well-fitting swim brief with you.
If you’re travelling to a warm destination and wearing absorbent products, the humidity combined with a lot of time on your feet may irritate your skin. To be prepared, it’s a good idea to pack an incontinence barrier or moisturizing cream. These products will work to reduce skin damage and irritation due to humidity or chafing from consistent walking.
If you’re spending a lot of time doing physical activity while on your trip, make sure you stay properly hydrated. That said, it’s important to not over hydrate to help better manage your incontinence.
You should also do your best to avoid foods and drinks that will irritate your bladder. Alcohol and caffeine are examples of beverages to avoid. You can also check out this list of 10 Foods and Drinks to Avoid if You’re Managing Incontinence for more insight.
We hope these tips will help you plan your next trip with confidence! If you are planning to travel soon, we wish you a happy and safe journey. Always remember that Healthwick is here to help, if you have any questions or need some assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
]]>When I first started working at Healthwick, I had more experience with incontinence products than one may expect for a 20-year-old.
This experience was not just personal, but also came from my ongoing nursing education and previous employment as a PSW.
I not only learned about incontinence through textbooks at school or through phone conversations with customers, but I also witnessed it first hand at hospitals, retirement & long-term care facilities, and during my clinical placements even before entering the customer service side of things.
This extensive exposure to incontinence has greatly influenced my approach to customer service at Healthwick.
Through my nursing experience and time at Healthwick, I have witnessed how overwhelming the world of incontinence can be. There is an extensive range of products available, and many individuals have no idea where to start.
Regardless of your age or whether you're shopping for yourself or on behalf of someone else, the task can feel incredibly daunting. That's why I urge you to place that burden on us.
When I interact with each customer, I prioritize empathy and patience.
Incontinence is a highly individualized condition that varies greatly from person to person.

Incontinence products are not one-size-fits-all.
It's essential to understand that finding the right product may involve trying out different options until you discover the one that works best for you.
Don't hesitate to seek our guidance and recommendations along the way.
Effective communication is crucial. Take the time to share your specific needs, concerns, and preferences with us.

]]>A Bit About Male Anatomy
Urine is made by the kidneys and stored in the bladder, which is connected to the penis by the urethra that passes through the prostate. When you have to urinate, nerves signal the bladder to squeeze, forcing urine into the urethra, which relaxes allowing urine to pass out of the body.
Urinary leaks can happen when:
Urinary incontinence is most commonly associated with aging, but can affect men of any age. And it’s a very common problem; the US Centers for Disease Control estimate more than 50% of senior men experience incontinence.
Male Incontinence Products
Men have a lot of options when it comes to discreetly managing incontinence and what you choose usually depends on the level and type of leakage you’re experiencing.
Light Occasional Leakage
The most popular product for gentlemen is simply a male guard. These modest, absorbent pouches fit inside the front of your regular briefs or boxer briefs and catch small leaks before they stain your clothing. They have a waterproof backing to prevent leaking through and are small enough to carry a spare in a large pant pocket. They’re discreet and undetectable under clothing, and very affordable.
Click Here to view male guards.
Sudden Urge Leakage
If your bladder is prone to unexpectedly releasing entirely, often at embarrassing moments, a more absorbent and complete solution is required.
The most popular product for men is an male absorbent underwear. These replace your existing underwear and provide full coverage with moderate to heavy absorbency. The front groin area is embedded with super absorbent polymer that immediately starts soaking up urine as soon as your bladder releases, and the underwear has a waterproof but cloth-like outer shell that stops urine from leaking through.
Click Here to view absorbent underwear.
When shopping for absorbent underwear, fit is critical. The underwear should fit snugly (to prevent leaks around the legs) but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. We strongly recommend sampling underwear products in variety of sizes and brands to find one that will work best for you.

If you require even more absorption (such as in the case of night-time incontinence when your full bladder releases in your sleep) or if you’re having trouble finding underwear that fits, consider tabbed adult “briefs”.
“Briefs” is a confusing word, and most people assume they mean underwear-like products. Actually, in medical language, “briefs” are really just adult diapers – similar to absorbent underwear, but the sides are open and you have adjustable Velcro-like tabs that you fit to your unique shape.
Many men feel there’s a stigma attached to wearing tabbed briefs, but they do provide some important and unique benefits. Male adult diapers are adjustable (so you can get a better fit), they can be changed without having to completely remove your pants (just drop your drawers to remove and put on a new one) and are available in a higher level of absorbency than underwear (perfect for full nighttime incontinence). Tabbed briefs also tend to be slightly less expensive than underwear.
Click Here to view tabbed briefs (adult diapers).
Another solution that is unique for men is an external catheter. This is simply a condom-like sheath that is held in place with a gentle adhesive, and connected by a line to a holding bag. Bags come in either leg style (suitable for wearing under loose trousers) or bed-side style, allowing for an interrupted night’s sleep.

Overflow Leakage
For those who have enlarged prostates, or nerve damage that may cause the bladder to be full without necessarily signaling the need to urinate, a male catheter might be an option.
Catheters prompt many men to cringe, but they’re really quite a good solution for specific cases. For those with a prostate blocking their urethra, an internal male intermittent catheter can help relieve bladder pressure on your schedule in a regular toilet.
The catheter comes in a variety of diameters, so you can find one that is painless to insert, and with different tips, to help gently move past an enlarged prostate. Compact styles are small enough to fit in your pocket so can you can relieve yourself when you feel its likely your bladder is full, thus preventing an overflow.

]]>There’s a lot of confusion in the marketplace about how to manage continence issues and swimming, and how swim diapers work. Let’s bust the top 3 myths we commonly hear here at Healthwick.
Fact: There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to take a dip in the pool if you use a properly designed swim product and follow some simple steps. In fact, since incontinence is often associated with a lack of exercise, regular swimming might help improve your continence management!
By law, most municipal pools require that a person with incontinence wear a containment brief or swim diaper with the purpose of containing accidents.
What is not commonly known is that swim diapers are not intended to be completely waterproof nor are they intended to absorb urine – their primary purpose is to contain fecal soiling.
Pool operators know that the trace amounts of urine (along with sweat, dead skin cells, shampoo, etc) that are on your skin are effectively neutralized by the chlorine and other chemicals in the pool, as are small amounts of urine you might leak due to accidents. What they’re really concerned about is solid waste (i.e. feces), which can’t be broken down and would require a complete flushing of the pool if it was to get into the water supply.
While some containment briefs do have a small amount of absorbency (basically enough to handle a small leak going from the change room to the poolside), they’re not intended to be absorbent. Think it through logically – if you wore an absorbent product such as a regular diaper or pad in the pool, the first thing it’s going to do is absorb pool water, swelling up immediately.
SoSecure features a Velcro, reusable, machine washable swim diaper that fits easily under bathing suits - which is similar to Swimmates, but disposable.
With a proper fitting swim brief, in the case of an accident, there is no leakage of bowel material and you are protected for the time it takes you to go to the bathroom to clean and change yourself (which you should do immediately, of course). Don’t worry about a little pee. That said….
Fact: No, it’s not okay. And it can have serious health consequences.
The flip side of the previous myth is the belief that there’s no harm in completely voiding one’s bladder in the pool, instead of going to the bathroom.
Remember that pool operators aren’t really concerned about small amounts of urine, however larger amounts do bring up some concerns. Chlorine is used in pools to kill germs, but when it binds to body waste (particularly urine) it forms chemicals called chloramines. Chloramines in the water irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract (including the nose) when they off gas from the water and into the air above. This is particularly concerning for indoor pools where gases are contained.
If you’ve ever come back from the pool with red irritated eyes or a slight cough, it’s important to realize it wasn’t really the chlorine; it’s because there have been too many people either not showering before swimming or peeing in the pool.
Proper pool etiquette says that you should empty your bladder and take a full shower with soap and water before getting in the water. Similarly, you should vacate the pool and use the toilet if you feel you need to.
Fact: NO.
Nope.
Nu-huh.
No way.
Never happened.
Please, please stop repeating this myth.
This myth has been around as long as the modern swimming pool has (appearing as early as the 1950s in some written works), as a tactic for parents and lifeguards to get gullible kids to use the washroom instead of peeing in the pool.
This myth has become so pervasive in North America that in 2014, the US Centres for Disease Control released a special statement to debunk it and assure the public that no such chemical exists, nor was it ever likely to. Remember that everyone has trace amounts of urine on their skin; such a chemical would have everyone in the pool looking spotty!
Despite this assurance, many people not only still believe this myth, they continue to perpetuate it, which has actively discouraged untold numbers of people managing incontinence from enjoying swimming. It’s time we put this myth to rest and let everyone enjoy the pool.
- Canadian Made and Completely Discreet
]]>As a Customer Care Agent, I have had the opportunity to educate many people on the ins and outs that I think are beneficial for our customers to know.
Here are some of my top tips and factoids, to ensure that you receive exactly what you want and need.
And it can cause quite an unpleasant mix-up if you don't know the proper vernacular.
Briefs (Adult Diapers) - This is the traditional style, with tabbed closures on the side.
Underwear - These are the pull-up style that resemble a typical pair of cotton underwear.
Someone will rarely be the same size across the board, as dimensions vary greatly between makes and models.
For example, here are measurements for the size Large in three different products; two of which are the same brand:
TENA® Super Plus Incontinence Underwear for Women Size L fits 37”-50”
TENA Proskin Overnight Underwear Size L fits 45"-58"
NorthShore GoSupreme Underwear Size L fits 36”-48”
This is why we stress the importance of taking your measurements.
You will need to measure at your waist (where the belly button hits) and your hips (at the top of the hip bone, just above the buttocks) and then shop according to the larger of the two.
A proper fit ensures that you are less likely to encounter leakage and discomfort.
Products are designed for specific purposes.
You wouldn't wear a toque under a baseball cap to get more sun coverage. Please don't wear two diapers at once, or a regular pad inside of pull-up underwear. This only increases your chance for leakage.
Make sure to keep track of your stock and order well enough in advance.
As a kid, whenever I would go on vacation my Mother would tell me to pack an obscene amount of underwear. Going away for a weekend? 14 pairs of underwear should do the trick! Did I ever need those 12 extra pairs? No! But I was prepared for the worst case scenario.
I suggest preparing in the same way.
Make sure that you have some "just in case" diapers set aside. Be prepared for a manufacturer delay, a postal truck catching fire during delivery, a dinosaur escaping the park and stomping through our warehouse.
You never know what can happen, so don't wait until you are down to your last pair to replenish your stock.
We have a partnership with Canada Post and UPS to deliver orders from our warehouse to our customers.
We can certainly write request notes on the shipping labels, such as "deliver directly to the door" or "take directly to the post office for pick up", but we can not ensure that the individual making 100+ deliveries per day noticed that note.
Please be patient with us if it hasn't been delivered according to your request. We will try to help as much as we can with getting the problem sorted out.
And finally,
All of us at Healthwick are here to help you.
We love to share our knowledge, as well as learn from our customers.
The ultimate goal is to take as much worry and stress about your incontinence away from you as possible. There are better things to be thinking about in this life!

This is one of the most common complaints we hear from our customers, but the fact is; if you’re already in a well-fitting and high absorbency product, it might not be your adult diaper. Maybe you just need to amp up the absorbency.
One of the most useful, yet little known incontinence products on the market is the booster pad. Why is that? Booster pads are often confused with regular incontinence pads. However, as similar as these two products may seem, they serve different purposes. Let’s break down the benefits of booster pads and why they may be the perfect fit for you.
What is a booster pad?
Booster pads, also referred to as diaper doublers, are used in conjunction with another product. When used with an adult diaper or underwear, booster pads can increase the capacity of the host product. Booster pads are easy to change and increase the life of the host product, making them an economical option.
Unlike regular incontinence pads, booster pads do not have a plastic backing and are made of porous materials. This allows liquid to pass through into the host product, increasing the capacity. It’s important to remember that booster pads cannot be worn with traditional (non-absorbent) underwear, as the liquid will pass through into your regular underwear.
Why can’t I use a regular incontinence pad?
When people experience leakage, they look for a solution. Many people will think that adding an incontinence pad to their brief or underwear will increase the absorbency. This is not the case.
Regular incontinence pads have a plastic backing to prevent the overflow of liquid onto the undergarment they are attached to.
If you put a regular incontinence pad inside a brief or absorbent underwear, the pad will block liquid from absorbing into the host product.
Once the added incontinence pad is at capacity, the overflow liquid will leak out around the legs, as the plastic backing prevents the excess liquid from being absorbed by the brief or underwear.
If you need some extra protection with your brief or underwear, try a booster pads instead of traditional incontinence pads.
How do I know if I need a booster pad?
Booster pads are a great option for anyone experiencing overflow leakage. They add an extra layer of protection and can increase the life of your diaper or absorbent underwear.
This product is particularly useful for overnight protection. If you wake up in the morning and find you have soaked through your overnight diaper or underwear, booster pads are the way to go. Simply place the booster pad inside your incontinence product before bed for an extra level of absorbency. Also remember that like most incontinence products, booster pads are available in a variety of absorbency levels.
What booster pad is right for me?
Booster pads, like most incontinence products, have a variety of different options available. Booster pads differ by absorbency, shape, brand, and more.

]]>We're asked this question often by shoppers, so we thought it would be helpful to put together a video explaining how these two products differ.
Booster pads are an absorbent product without a waterproof backing. They're used to add extra capacity to other incontinence products, like adult diapers or underwear. Booster pads should never be worn in your underwear as the liquid will pass right through the product and into your clothes.
Incontinence pads, on the other hand, are more similar to an adult diaper or underwear in terms of functionality. You can think of an incontinence pad as an oversized menstrual pad with a different shape and absorbency level.
Incontinence pads can be worn in your regular underwear (or a pad holder if you prefer) because they have a waterproof backing that helps to contain any liquid within the product.

Incontinence affecting plus-size individuals is often called "bariatric incontinence." People who manage bariatric incontinence face unique challenges when it comes to choosing the right product.
What exactly is Bariatric Incontinence?
The term bariatric refers to a branch of medicine that studies obesity. Obesity-related medical professionals are concerned with determining the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity.
Obese people with incontinence are said to have bariatric incontinence. Obesity can cause incontinence in many cases because the extra weight puts extra pressure on the bladder. This weakens the muscles surrounding the bladder, allowing urine to leak out.

Male external catheters, also known as condom catheters, are a device used to manage urinary incontinence. Much like a condom, these catheters are worn over the penis. The urine is then drained from the male external catheter to a collection bag that is secured to the leg. If a male external catheter is being used overnight, most collection bags can be connected to a bedside overnight collection bag.
Like most incontinence products, male external catheters are available in a variety of sizes. Unlike intermittent catheters that are sized in French scale (FR), male external catheters are sized in millimeters (mm). It is important to select the correct size, as incorrect sizing can cause problems. A male external catheter that is too large will likely leak, and one that is too small may cause irritation and discomfort to the wearer.
Selecting a male external catheter that will work for you and be comfortable to wear is essential. If you are sensitive to Latex or have a Latex allergy, ensure that you select a product that is made from a Latex-free material. Many male external catheters come with an adhesive to assist in securing the catheter to the penis. If your skin is often sensitive to adhesives or you would prefer not to have an adhesive, it would be best to look at other male external catheter options.
To use this type of catheter, you will require a collection bag with drainage tubing. For overnight use, you'll need a bedside bag. At Healthwick, collection bags and male external catheters are sold separately, unless otherwise specified in the product description. Extension tubing can also be purchased separately.
If you’re looking for a more discreet option for managing urinary incontinence, male external catheters are the way to go. Not only are they less invasive than intermittent catheters (nothing is being inserted into the penis), they are a convenient and easy-to-use option.
Your healthcare professional can assist you in determining if a male external catheter is a good option for you. You can also reach out to our customer care team, they would be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

]]>pH stands for Potential Hydrogen, and this term is used to describe how acidic or nonacidic (alkaline) something is. The pH scale consists of 14 numbers, where the lower numbers are acidic and the higher numbers are alkaline. The number 7 on this scale is considered neutral, meaning it is not considered acidic nor alkaline.
Our skin is heavily affected by pH levels. Healthy skin is on the more acidic side, ranking between a number 3 and 6 on the pH scale. The acidity is beneficial to your skin as it helps to fight off harmful microbes and anything else that can damage your skin.
For those who manage incontinence, maintaining the right skin pH is very important. Frequent contact with urine, feces and bacteria can impact your skin’s pH level, along with temperature changes and humidity.
Your perineal and genital area should sit at a pH level of approximately 6.5, but varies anywhere from 5 to 7 pH. Other areas of your body, like your hands, face and arms, tend to sit somewhere between 4.7 and 5.75 on the pH scale. The lower acidity in this perineal and genital area is what makes your skin prone to breakdown and bacterial infections.
If you’re changing incontinence products often, you’re likely also washing and cleansing your perineal area at the same time. Although frequent washing of this area may seem like a good idea, exposing your skin to washing with soap and other chemicals too often is not suitable for the pH level.
Incontinence products are often designed to promote good skin health and maintain the right pH level. Wearing briefs that wick away unwanted moisture and washing with incontinence cleansers and creams can help your perineal area stay at the right pH level. It’s also advantageous to change your incontinence product once it is soiled so that the urine and/or feces isn’t staying in contact with this delicate skin area.
As mentioned above, using a specially formulated incontinence product can help to ensure your skin stays healthy and the pH level is maintained. Here are a few products that work to preserve and care for your skin’s pH. If you have any questions about any of these products, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Healthwick customer care team. We’re always here to help.

]]>However, this does not directly result in urinary incontinence. Although it is very common amongst the elderly to have urinary incontinence, it is not a “mandatory” part of aging.
Seniors have a higher chance of developing diseases and conditions that result in bladder control problems. These conditions may include diabetes, nerve damage, prostate cancer in men, and pelvic organ prolapse disorder.
And generally, the loss of muscle mass as we get older affects a senior’s chance of developing incontinence as the pelvic floor and bladder support muscles become weaker.
Thus urinary incontinence is a symptom of an underlying issue. If the problem persists, go to your doctor. Remember that incontinence does commonly impact the elderly, but is not directly caused by age. Urinary incontinence actually impacts people of all ages. Fortunately, incontinence is highly treatable and can be managed by incontinence products.

]]>While you’re out and about, how can you make sure that you remain comfortable and secure against leaks and odours? We have some tips - many from our own customers! – that can help.
Know Your Washroom Options
While many businesses are re-opening, their washrooms may not be. Restaurants, for example, are opening their patios in some areas but are not opening dining rooms, meaning that bathrooms may still be inaccessible.
A simple phone call to a business you’re planning to visit to ask if bathrooms will be accessible can be a weight lifted from your mind.
If bathrooms aren’t an option at the places you’re visiting, consider making multiple short trips from home (with bathroom breaks between each) instead of one longer trip to multiple businesses.
Bring Supplies
If you know there’s a chance you may need to change a soiled underwear/brief/pad while out, it makes sense to be prepared.
Bringing a change of product is necessary, but also consider cleanup products. These may include a small package of disposable perineal wipes (or even simply a few in a sealed sandwich bag instead of the whole package) or a wipe on/wipe off perineal cleanser that can be applied with regular toilet paper.
For ladies, a purse is the most common accessory to hold a small selection of supplies, and our male customers have reported they often carry messenger bags, waist pouches or backpacks for the same reason.
A helpful tip from our customers - also consider bringing a recycled grocery bag or small kitchen garbage bag so you can dispose of your product and wipes discreetly in the washroom waste bin.
Dress Accordingly
It may sound obvious, but our customers have also pointed out that times that they’ve forgotten to choose clothing appropriate for changing in a small bathroom stall.
The most expedient solution, of course, is simply a skirt but that’s obviously not an option for everyone. For that reason, many people opt to go with either absorbent pads (with their regular underwear or comfort pants) OR tabbed briefs (commonly called adult diapers), so that they don’t have to disrobe from the waist down in a public washroom to put on a clean product.
A helpful tip for those who don’t like the bulk and/or change to the fit of their pants with adult diapers – try wearing your regular underwear over top! This helps to mold the absorbent tabbed brief to your body, creating a slimmer profile and reducing any fear of a “rustling” sound.
We hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy as you slowly return to normal shopping and get out and about this summer!

Myth #1: It's irreversible.
Incontinence is not permanent. Although it will not go away on its own, there are exercises, dietary changes, devices, medications, and surgery that can treat the bladder problem. A urogynecologist, for example, can help you find answers based on which type of incontinence you face, as well as understand which behavioural changes and other treatments will be most effective in relieving your incontinence.
Myth #2: Everyone experiences incontinence the same.
Incontinence affects each person differently, so treatment should be tailored to each individual. Some people have stress incontinence, which is urine loss caused by coughing, sneezing, or running; and some people have urge incontinence, also known as "overactive bladder," which is urine loss caused by a strong and sudden urge to urinate. Read more about the types of incontinence here, and how to manage incontinence here.
Myth #3: Everyone can tell you’re wearing an adult diaper.
This misconception is not true, and it just takes a bit of trying out products and seeing what works best for you to ensure the best discreet option for you. Fortunately, with our free sample program, you can try up to 5 samples of products you think may work best for you. Once you find which worked best for you, you can place an order. This way, you’ll choose the most discreet product, and no one will be able to tell you’re wearing an incontinence product.
We have a selection of products for different levels of absorbency. If you have light leakage, pads and male guards may be what you’re looking for. If you face moderate to heavy incontinence, absorbent underwear could be the right choice for you. Lastly, if you have moderate to maximum incontinence, adult diapers/ briefs are likely the product for you.
Myth #4: Incontinence is just a bother and not a health problem.
Urinary incontinence is serious and has health and social consequences. It’s linked with depression, decreased activity, and social withdrawal. It may make being in public spaces more difficult, such as at work, at a party, or on vacation. Make sure to read this blog that helps you with managing incontinence in public.

Myth #5: When you live with incontinence, there is an odour all the time.
This is not necessarily true, so long as you maintain good personal hygiene and use the correct products. Healthwick carries wipes and washcloths that can trap moisture and odour, thus providing peace of mind. Changing your incontinence product (diaper, underwear, pad, or male guard) as often as the packaging recommends also reduces the chances of odour and increases hygiene.
Myth #6: You can’t enjoy life anymore.
You must not allow your incontinence to stand in the way of enjoying everyday activities and social life. Even if the incontinence is out of your control, remember that you can still manage it using all of the treatment options and products available. If you feel like incontinence is taking up too much of your life, please consult a healthcare professional.
We hope busting these 6 myths about incontinence helps put your mind at ease. Don’t let incontinence myths spook you! We hope you and your loved ones enjoy a safe and happy Halloween. Take care!
]]>What is Liquid Protein?
Our bodies need protein to function properly, strengthen our muscles, support our joints, and provide nutrients. We cannot function properly without protein. This is why protein consumption, no matter its form, is crucial for our bodies to avoid being fragile, weak, sore, constantly fatigued, or prone to a compromised immune system.
Taking only solid foods as a source of protein is fairly easy in the average diet. However, there are certain situations in which liquid protein is more beneficial, and is a preferred method of delivering protein that does not compromise nutrients and minerals, as solid protein does.
As the name implies, liquid protein is protein that is consumed as a drink, rather than chewed and eaten. In addition to yogurt and milk, liquid protein can also be found in nutritional shakes and supplements. A liquid protein can provide the same amount of protein as a solid protein, depending on the type of protein you consume. When choosing liquid protein for your diet, it's important to consider other factors such as fat, carbohydrate, and any other essential minerals.
What is the best time to take liquid protein?
Liquid protein can be consumed or supplemented as you desire (or as discussed with your healthcare professional), but there are certain situations in which it is the best option. It is likely that your body will not be able to tolerate a large quantity of solid food that would provide all necessary nutrients when you are undergoing surgery or recovering from surgery. Choosing a liquid protein source containing all essential and non-essential amino acids can keep you strong, repair your tissue, and supply your organs with the protein they need to heal.
Liquid protein sources can also be beneficial to endurance athletes, individuals who have trouble swallowing, individuals who do not consume adequate protein, or individuals who need to improve their nutrition.
Healthwick carries LiquaCel Liquid Protein, a great tasting hydrolyzed collagen liquid protein containing 16g of protein and 2.5g of arginine in a 1 oz serving. LiquaCel is available in 32 oz bottles and convenient 1 oz on-the-go packets in 4 delicious flavours as well as an unflavoured option. LiquaCel can be consumed straight, or mixed with as little as 1-2 oz. of water. Unflavoured LiquaCel can even be added to coffee and tea, or any other favourite beverage.
The major benefit of LiquaCel is it’s the perfect alternative to large volume supplements that are difficult to consume. LiquaCel is also Bariatric and dialysis friendly!
